The Friends of the Petterson Museum of Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California announce the major fall event of the 1012-1013 season: An Afternoon of Kabuki Dances presented by the students of the Fujima Kansuma School in Los Angeles.

The event, which will take place on Oct. 21 at 3:00 pm in Decker Hall at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, will feature three favorites of the kabuki dance repertoire: “Ninin Sambaso,” “Mitsumen Komori,” and “Onna Date.”

The contrasting dances represent three distinct character types from the kabuki world: the celebratory dance of two males representing the old man from the ancient ritual play, “Sambaso,” the young baby-sitter of “Mitusmen Komori,” who impersonates three comic masked characters to amuse the baby she is tending, and finally the elegant woman trained in martial arts who heroically repels her attackers.

Fujima Kansuma, the prominent teacher of classical Japanese Dance, recipient of many awards including the Order of the Precious Crown from the Emperor of Japan, is well-known for her mastery of kabuki dance, having studied for many years in Japan with the most famous kabuki actor/dancer of the twentieth century, Kikugoro VI.

She received her Fujima name from Fujima Kanjuro, Grand Master (Gosoke) of the Fujima School and has enjoyed a distinguished career in the United States where she has taught countless students.

Pilgrim Place is a retirement community in Claremont, whose residents have lived in dozens of countries around the world, many as teachers, missionaries or in other service organizations.

The Petterson Museum of Intercultural Art reflects the international commitment of residents of this community, and each year the Friends of the Museum present a Celebration of the Arts of a region or country.

The Afternoon of Kabuki Dance will continue the Japanese theme set by the Celebration of the Arts of Japan earlier this year.
