Wartime Japanese internment to be remembered at 41st Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage, Apr 24

To learn wartime Japanese internment experiences, the 41st Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage will take place on Saturday, April 24 at the Manzanar National Historic Site, located on US Highway 395 in California’s Owens Valley, between the towns of Lone Pine and Independence, approximately 230 miles north of Los Angeles. Each year, hundreds of students, teachers, community members, clergy and former internees attend the Pilgrimage and the Manzanar At Dusk program, which follows the afternoon program, starting at 5:00 pm at Lone Pine High School. Leaders in the field of Japanese gardens in Southern California will meet on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2010, hosted by the historic Storrier-Stearns Japanese Garden in Pasadena. Attendees will discuss issues of garden sustainability and social impact. “Japanese gardens are an international phenomenon,” said art historian and garden scholar Kendall Brown, professor of art at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).
