Herb and Dorothy Vogel are a former postal clerk and librarian, and built a world-class art collection.
They never sold a work for profit, instead giving it all away to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.
When their gift of thousands of contemporary art works proves too big for even the NGA, the couple decides to spread their priceless collection across the country—donating 50 works to one museum in each of the 50 states, for a gift of 2,500 works.
One of the largest and most significant philanthropic projects in art history, the Vogels’ inspiring gift is a testament to their belief that art is for everyone.
About the Filmmaker:
Megumi Sasaki began her career as a journalist for print media before joining NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster in 1992.
Sasaki started her production company Fine Line Media, Inc. in 2002, and her first film HERB & DOROTHY was seen in theaters across the US and in art fairs internationally.
In Japan, Megumi and a group of volunteers self-distributed the film and set the 2010 theatrical box office record for a documentary film in the country. HERB & DOROTHY 50X50 is her second feature film.
