The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts presents koto artist Kozue Matsumoto. Performing original compositions and traditional Japanese music, Kozue has prepared an event showcasing her musical works and collaborations at CalArts featuring projection-mapped animations, larger-than-life origami art and real-time digitally processed koto performance.

Matsumoto will perform in and present the world premiere of a new chamber opera by guest composer Rita Ueda, a CalArts alumna, featuring the performance on three never-before-combined zithers from Japan, Korea, and China.

Ueda has had works performed by The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

Originally from the Tohoku region in Japan, Matsumoto has dedicated her concert to all the lives affected by the Tohoku Earthquake of 2011. A very special origami crane created for this performance will be the traditional vehicle for the prayers of those in attendance to be carried to all lives affected by the earthquake.

The CalArts community welcomes all to appreciate the different musical traditions featured in this unique concert, as musicians from different cultures collaborate for the first time to create exciting expressions of contemporary themes and concepts.
