“Fire Rite” ceremony at Koyasan Buddhist Temple in Little Tokyo set on Jan. 1, 2017, at 10AM

Koyasan Buddhist Temple, 342 East First Street in Little Tokyo, will hold its “Fire Rite” on Jan. 1, 2017 at 10:00 am.

Bishop Junkun Imamura will officiate the ceremony and kick off three-day New Year’s celebration in the temple.

New Year’s Day Service or Shusho-e at Koyasan temple is the largest event of the year 2017 at the temple.

The Traditional Shingon Fire Ritual Service will begin with chanting mantras and beating of the drum with the goal of bringing joy, enlightenment, good health and peace of mind. The year 2017 is the “Year of the Rooster” (that has been1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017).

Ema (wish tablet), Omamori (amulet), Omikuji (fortunes), Hamaya (Lucky arrows) and consecrated Ofuda (talisman) will be available at the site. The temple is opened from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Jan. 1 through Jan. 3. The temple will be open to the public.
