The North County firefighter killed while battling the firestorm in Ventura County died from burns and smoke inhalation, according to autopsy results released Saturday.

The Ventura County medical examiner’s office did not release any additional details about the death of Cal Fire engineer Cory Iverson, 32, which remains under investigation.

A four-hour funeral procession will be held Sunday, beginning about 10 a.m. at the Ventura County Medical Center. The procession will travel south through San Diego County on Interstate 15 and arrive at the El Camino Memorial Park about 2:15 p.m.

Iverson died Thursday while fighting the massive Thomas fire, which is now burning into Santa Barbara County and continuing to threaten homes and prompt evacuations. The blaze has burned 259,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings.

He was with a five-engine strike team from San Diego and engaged in a “very active part of the fire” just outside of Fillmore when he was fatally injured, according to Cal Fire. He was outside his truck at the time.

Iverson had been with Cal Fire since 2009 and worked at a station in Dulzura.

He leaves behind a pregnant wife and 2-year-old daughter.

Donations continued to pour in to help the family. A GoFundMe account “For Ashley Iverson and her girls” was at nearly $300,000 by Saturday afternoon. Donations can also be made through the Benevolent Fund benefiting Iverson and his family.

A memorial for Iverson is planned for 10 a.m. on Dec. 23 at The Rock Church, 2277 Rosecrans St. in Point Loma.
