This event is the 32nd Annual Cultural Night for the Nikkei Student Union titled, “Kaika”. This event celebrates Japanese American culture and educates those who attend on the history of the community.

This specific cultural night will focus on the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan and how it affected both the Japanese community and the Japanese American community here in the US.

There will be a drama portion and performances from the different affiliated performance groups – NSU Odori, NSU Modern, and Kyodo Taiko.

The drama performance this year will focus on the events surrounding the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, 2011.

The performance deals with themes of maturity, acceptance, and unity through the story of Hana, a Japanese high school and a traumatized  survivor of the tsunami, who initially refuse the help of others and fails to see a future for herself and her community.

Only through her interactions with Kendra , a Japanese American volunteer who stays with her throughout the aftermath of the tsunami, does she see the importance and strength of a community coming together during times of hardship.
