LOS ANGELES (Cultural News: Forwarded for the Tuna Canyon Detention Station Coalition) - The Tuna Canyon Detention Station Coalition announced its Third Annual Marc Stirdivant Scholarship for Justice Scholarship with new categories and fresh topics.

For the first time, the Coalition will offer an additional $500 scholarship for a 1-3 minute video that provides convincing reasons to preserve and support the Tuna Canyon Detention Station as a place to remember history.

Tuna Canyon Detention Station was a Department of Justice camp in Tujunga (LA county) which imprisoned thousands of Japanese, German and Italian aliens during World War II.

Currently the Site is designated by the City of Los Angeles as a historic and efforts are underway to secure an educational center.

Scholarship Chair Ernie Nishii noted, "it’s not enough to have history in our books- we must empathize with those who suffered civil liberty violations so that we are armed to fight such injustice in the future-- that only comes through the language of video and art. We hope that the youth create this art and are inspired to stand up."

As there are no more historic structures, only the oaks stand testament to the civil liberties violations that occurred at the Tuna Canyon Detention station.

The Coalition also seeks art that will enable people to visualize and understand the history of the site so deeply that they are motivated to prevent future violations.

The first place award for a high school student's art that evokes this response is $500.

Finally, in a nod to moving writers and essayists, the Coalition is also offering $500 for the essay that describes how the youth envision their own role in preventing civil liberty violations from occurring to others as it had to the Japanese, German, and Italians at Tuna Canyon.

According to Tuna Canyon Chair Nancy Oda, "we wanted to maximize participation so that one person could win all three contests for $1,500 or three people could win $500 each.  We know the journey to create this art, essay or 1-3 minute video will grow our community and will be well worth the effort.”

Deadline for entry is August 31, 2023. For more details go to www.tunacanyon.org

Only the oaks stand testament to the civil liberties violations that occurred at the Tuna Canyon Detention Station (TCDS): no historic buildings exist. Create Art that will enable people to fully understand the history of the Tuna Canyon Detention Station and feel deeply enough to stop future civil liberty violations.
