“Narrative in the Art of Hokusai” is presented by Hollis Goodall, the former curator of Japanese art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
Step into the artistic universe of Katsushika Hokusai, a legend in Japanese art, during this enlightening talk. Learn how his unique storytelling evolved from early illustrations to renowned printmaking and painting, revealing the growth of his iconic figures and landscapes.
Katsushika Hokusai had an extraordinarily long career, remaining active until his death at age 90. From the beginning of his practice in his twenties, he brought his childhood love for illustrated stories into his career. Throughout much of his life, illustrating books remained Hokusai’s bread and butter. He would achieve such acclaim that renowned novelists complained that people bought their books only for the Hokusai illustrations. Even during his lifetime, some of his books reached Europe, and set off a wave of Japonisme. Learn more in this special closing weekend program.
Recorded Online Screening: Members $5, General $10.
Online version will be emailed to ticketholders one week after the onsite event.
