Wakana Kimura’s “Buddha’s Nirvana” illustrating the death of the Buddha will be on view at Zenshuji Soto Mission temple on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024 at 11:00 am in the Nehane-Parinirvana ceremony.

The Nehane ceremony is open to the public. Admission is free.

Zenshuji Soto Mission is located at 123 S Hewitt Street, Little Tokyo, Los Angeles Downtown.

Kimura’s “Buddha’s Nirvana” is available to view only once a year.

Kimura took six years to complete a large-scale “Buddha’s Nirvana” on traditional Japanese handmade paper and with a traditional Japanese handmade scroll.

In 2023, Zenshuji Soto Mission marked 100th anniversary. On Feb. 19, 2023, the temple offered Kaigen-Hoyo, the eye-opening ceremony to consecrate Kimura’s newly made Buddhist image by inserting the eyes thereby investing it with soul.
