Six months after Eaton fire, survivors and community leaders to gather and address policy and fiscal needs two weeks ahead of CA budget approval
LA Voice — Sunday, June 1 at Fair Oaks Burger - Family-owned restaurant that has acted as an interim regional gathering space in wake of fires - Eaton Fire survivors, local community members, impacted Angelenos, grassroots organizations, and spiritual leaders who have been critical to the local recovery efforts in the region are gathering to uplift the voices of those impacted by the wildfires who have lost homes, lost jobs, and small businesses. They will march to historic sites under Dena Rise Up, which also includes a statement of unity focused on key policy goals.
Ahead of the close of the California budget cycle, survivors and community members are calling for a recovery that meets everyone’s needs, where no person or family gets left behind or stands alone. This recovery should ensure everyone has what they need to rebuild and remain in their communities.
In addition to directly impacted testimony and clergy statements, the group will be urging state and regional elected officials to meet our collective moral responsibility to provide for those impacted by addressing the following critical policy areas of need:
- True solidarity - recovery should not discriminate
- Comprehensive cleanup - protect the health of residents, workers, and environment
- Full and fair inclusion - no one left behind
- Real choices - support residents to stay
- Local opportunity - rebuild locally, not for profit
- Tenants’ rights - protect renters from exploitation
- Economic justice - fair pay for workers
- Support lifelines - aid for homeowners, nonprofits, and survivors
- Green renewal - rebuild sustainably and fire-safe
- Shared humanity - people first, “solo el pueblo salva al pueblo”

The Eaton Fire broke out on January 7, 2025, and was contained on January 31. In those 24 days, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the flames killed 17 civilians, injured nine firefighters, destroyed 9,414 structures and damaged 1,074 others. Families have lost not only their homes and belongings, but income and jobs, housing security, and in some cases their places of worship and learning. The fires have also dangerously altered land, air, and water quality, leaving small children, the elderly, and immunocompromised people severely at risk.
In response to the devastation wrought by one of the worst wildfire incidents in LA County history, Altadena and Pasadena residents, fire survivors, faith leaders, and community organizations have come together to promote a just and equitable reconstruction and restoration of the region through Dena Rise Up. From this unique and powerful effort, hundreds will march through key areas in Altadena and Pasadena culminating in a community rally. Dena Rise Up urges lawmakers to provide support to ALL people impacted by the Eaton Fire, as outlined in the Dena Rise Up Statement of Unity.
