As Makoto Taiko prepares for their annual concert at 6:00 pm on Saturday, June 2, at Occidental College’s Thorne Hall, the beat of their drums has taken on a sense of urgency.
This urgency or passion is what the players refer to as drumming with “makoto”, whereby the player releases all inhibition and exposes his true heart and soul.
Properly played, the drummers and audience will converge in what will be a spiritually powerful experience.
Under the direction of renowned taiko master, Koji Nakamura, the group shall perform both traditional and contemporary pieces.
Adeptly choreographed with strong, flowing lines exhibiting the confluence of beauty and power, the performance will be feast for the senses: visual, auditory, and tactile.
Admission is free, although a suggested donation of $10 per person is appreciated in order to cover concert costs and on-going maintenance of equipment.
Occidental College is located at 1600 Campus Road, Los Angeles 90041.
