Mr. Sameshima recently published “Yozan: The Great Tycoon” by Big Wave Publishing Company about Uesugi Yozan and John F Kennedy who admired Uesugi Yozan.
When Uesugi Yozan became the 9th head of the Yonezawa domain (today’s Yonezawa and Okitama region), his domain was in heavy debt. Uesugi Yozan is best remembered for his financial reforms, and he is often cited as an example of good governor of domain.
What gave Sameshima the ultimate impetus to start writing “Yozan” was the fact that John F. Kennedy had knowledge of Uesugi Yozan and his accomplishments. Kennedy has been quoted as saying Uesugi Yozan was the one Japanese he admired.
