2012 Folk songs of Tottori to be performed by artists from Japan, Oct 14

Mme. Matsuhiromi Sato will lead artists from Japan to present an enjoyable folk song show in Torrance on Oct 14.

Don’t miss an enjoyable and entertaining program of Japanese folk musicians and folk dances accompanied by traditional Japanese instruments such as the shamisen, taiko (drums), tsuzumi (hand-held drums), and kane (bells, percussion).

As part of a cultural exchange program, the Matsutoyo Kai Japanese folk music group will be presenting two performances featuring local Japanese folk song (minyo) artists and guest artists from the Tottori and Shimane regions of Japan. The programs include Dojo Sukui, Zeni Taiko, Tottori Shanshan Kasa Odori, Kaigara Bushi, and more.

Eighteen guest artists under the direction of head instructors Madame Matsuhiromi Sato and Master Fumio Hara will arrive in San Francisco from Japan and participate in a free minyo program on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 pm at the Nihonmachi Terrace, 1615 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94109.

They will be joined by the Matsutoyo Kai members of the Bay area.  On Sunday, Oct. 14, the guest artists will perform at 1:00 pm at the Holiday Inn Torrance located at 19800 South Vermont Ave, Torrance, CA 90502.

Also performing will be Matsutoyo Kai and Minyo Station, the jazz-fusion Japanese folk music group.

Admission for the 1:00 program is free.  Following the Los Angeles program at the Holiday Inn will be a hands-on shamisen workshop.

Reservations are a must for this special opportunity to have a free 30-minute lesson on this classical instrument.

And for those interested, there will be a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Torrance on Oct. 14 before the free program.

This luncheon will begin at 11:00 am and will be $25 per person, with reservations required by Oct. 6.
