16th Annual Japan America Kite Festival will be presented by the Japan America Society of Southern California and Up Up and Away Kite Club on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 11 am to 4:30 pm at North Side of Seal Beach Pier at Seal Beach, California.

A free shuttle will operate from 9:15 am to 5:30 pm on Oct. 14 from SeaPort Marina Hotel to the Japan America Kite Festival.

The Japan America Kite festival is designed for all family members to enjoy Japanese and international kites of all sizes and colors.

The programs include Kite Workshop and games for Children, Japanese food & cultural booths, 50′ x 100′ Giant Show kites, Taiko drum performance, Martial arts demonstrations, Kite Candy Drops for kids, Kite Battles and Stunt Kite demonstrations and much more.

As a part of the grand finale, the festival will have Japanese Bon Odori (traditional festival dance) at 4:00 pm. Grab Uchiwa (Japanese fan), wear a Yukata (summer Kimono) or Happi (festival coat) and join the dance!

The “Entertainment Stage” will feature the Naginata Federation performing traditional Japanese “Stick Fighting” (12:05 pm) and Senpokan Dojo performing the Kumitachi and Tameshigiri sword fighting (12:30 pm); and PROTA, led by David Wells, performing Taiko Drumming (1:05 pm).

The “Kids Area” will feature the Japanese American National Museum volunteers teaching the art of origami; Also featured will be the making of a Koi Nobori, Japanese calligraphy, face painting and a candy drop from the sky to delight the children.

Mattel Toys is one of the leading sponsors for the event, along with Delta Airlines, the sponsor for Kite Master Mikio Toki and his two assistants from Japan.
