Learn about the unique mechanics of bunraku in this closer look at Japanese traditional puppetry, led by members of Japan’s National Theater.
Master puppeteers will demonstrate key techniques of one-person and three-person puppet manipulation in bunraku theater, and some participants will have the opportunity to try operating puppets themselves.
Bunraku, a dramatic art integrating performances of skilled puppetry, shamisen music, and narration, has evolved since the early 17th century in Japan and is recognized by UNESCO as a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.”
