On August 28, 2025, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Mr. Takashi Omitsu from Northville, Michigan, was awarded the FY 2025 Commendation by the Minister for Foreign Affairs. This accolade recognizes individuals and organizations demonstrating exceptional achievements and significant contributions to strengthening international relations and fostering friendly ties between Japan and other nations.

Mr. Omitsu was conferred the award by Japanese Consul General Hajime Jimmy Kishimori during the Hinamatsuri cultural evet at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) in Detroit, Michigan, on March 1, 2026. Following the event, Mr. Omitsu shared his reflections:

I am deeply honored to have received the FY2025 Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The award ceremony was held during the Hinamatsuri event at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Having been involved with the DIA since its financial crisis, I never imagined receiving such a prestigious recognition. After retiring from corporate life, I began working in the new and unfamiliar field of promoting Japanese culture and fostering U.S.–Japan friendship.

Thanks to the support of many people, I have been able to continue this work.

Seeing so many people experience Japanese culture and share smiles has been my greatest encouragement. While I feel a renewed sense of responsibility with this honor,

I am also committed to building a foundation that will allow the next generation to carry this work forward. I will continue striving to create opportunities for people in the Detroit area to enjoy Japanese culture and to strengthen the bonds of friendship between Japan and the United States.
