MICHIGAN | Taiko Community Honors Esther Vandecar with Workshop, Memorial Service and Concert in Kalamazoo June 4, 5, 6

The taiko community will gather in Kalamazoo, Michigan, June 4–6, 2026, to celebrate the life and legacy of Esther Vandecar, a respected teacher and advocate for Japanese drumming across North America. Friends, family and fellow musicians will convene for community classes, a memorial celebration and public performances to honor Vandecar’s musical contributions and enduring influence.

Community Taiko Classes — Thursday, June 4

Two community classes will be offered at Kalamazoo College, led by Ken and Miro Koshio with Carolyn Koebel. An introductory session from 4:00–6:00 PM is designed for newcomers and older adults interested in exploring the dynamic art of Japanese drumming.

A reunion-style class for experienced players follows from 6:30–8:30 PM, welcoming past participants and members of the Kalamazoo College Taiko community. Registration is required through carolyn.koebel@gmail.com. Classes are offered on a sliding scale with a suggested donation of $15–30.

Celebration of Life — Friday, June 5

A public memorial service will take place Friday evening at Unity of Kalamazoo, 1204 Whites Road. Doors open at 5:00 PM with the program beginning at 5:30 PM. The gathering will honor Vandecar’s passion for taiko and recognize her extensive contributions to the art form, bringing together community members who were shaped by her teaching and leadership.

Performances and Community Gathering — Saturday, June 6

Saturday’s events include an outdoor ensemble performance at Art on the Mall in downtown Kalamazoo from 1:00–2:00 PM at the corner of Burdick and South Streets. Participating groups include Kalamazoo College Taiko Ensemble, Michigan Hiryu Daiko, and from Arizona: Koshio Gumi, Fushicho Daiko, Odaiko Sonora; and others who will honor Vandecar through collaborative music-making and remembrance.

Later that evening, Ken and Miro Koshio will present a duo taiko performance at the JAFAX conference in Grand Rapids, held at DeVos Place Convention Center, 303 Monroe Ave NW, at 7:00 PM.

The weekend brings together those who cherished Esther Vandecar to share memories, music and mutual support. Organizers invite the community to join in spirit if unable to attend in person and to keep Vandecar’s family in their thoughts and prayers.
