Experience the intersection of living craft, tradition, and movement. Begin the evening with a performance of Nihon Buyo—Japanese classical dance—by acclaimed dancer Ichinosuke Umekawa. Formally trained in ballet and Kabuki theater, Umekawa brings folk narratives to life through fluid grace and masterful expression.

Following the performance, join Guest Curator Meher McArthur to enjoy an advance preview of Painted Prayers — The Japanese Folk Art Tradition of Ema before the exhibition opens to the public the next day. McArthur will share her research and insights into these hand-painted wooden prayer tablets, illuminating the rich connections between sacred visual art, human devotion, and performing craft.
