Sawtelle Stories Forum XI – October 27

Grace’s Pastries and the Beginnings of Sawtelle Nikkei Community

The public is invited to attend the eleventh Sawtelle Stories Forum on Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the New Center for Psychoanalysis in the heart of Sawtelle Japantown.

George Izumi is a Master Baker and founder of the famous GRACE’S PASTRIES. George grew up in Sawtelle and during WWII was in Manzanar. He will talk about his teens to later becoming the Master Baker. George’s contribution to the Nikkei community will be explored.

Randy Sakamoto will discuss his grandfather, Gisuke Sakamoto, through the many photographs and memorabilia that he inherited. Randy’s grandfather was instrumental in establishing the Japanese Institute of Sawtelle and the West Los Angeles United Methodist Church.

The public is invited. No charge for admission, but donations to Japanese Institute of Sawtelle (JIS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will be welcomed to continue to subsidize future forums.

Part of this forum is subsidized by the Terasaki Community Outreach Funds.

For more information about this forum, please contact Randy Sakamoto at randysaka@gmail.com or Jack Fujimoto at jack.fujimoto@verizon.net.

Future forums are planned to add to the rich Japanese American history of Sawtelle.  www.sawtellejis.org
