Device Art combines art and design in ingenious and playful ways.
Maywa Denki is an art unit founded in Tokyo in 1993. Its performances often take the form of "product demonstrations," a typical feature of Japanese device art.
Device art gadgets are used by Maywa Denki both for performances and sold as consumer items. They have been designed by Novmichi Tosa, the group's founder and leader.
On Nov. 12, 2019, at the Lenart Auditorium in UCLA Fowler Museum, Tosa discusses and demonstrates his creative process by Maywa Denki device art, both familiar and huge popular devices like Otamatone, and with new inventions recently completed.
This is Tosa's first appearance in UCLA after nine years.
