Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California hosts the annual “Japanese New Year’s Celebration in Little Tokyo” on Friday, December 31, 2021 and Saturday, January 1, 2022.
With 2021 being a virtual event due to COVID, it has been 2 years since it was last held in Little Tokyo. Now in its 24th year, this event has increased visitors yearly and now has become an important event for New Year’s Los Angeles.
Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC) Plaza, the main location, will be filled with food and drink booths such as yakisoba, ramen, yakitori, fried chicken, curry, mochi, amazake, beer, shochu, and chuhais.
There will also be a shrine, kimono and booths with goods to be sold. On the stage, there will be taiko, mochi throwing, calligraphy, dance and martial arts performance fit for the new year.
Additionally, for the first time ever there will be a New Year’s Eve event on the day before.
Aside from the food booths, there will also be anime goods sold and entertainment such as cosplay shows and DJ performances in collaboration with “Anime Wonderland,” an anime screening event at the Aratani Theatre on the same day (admission for viewing of the animation is required).
This year, “Japanese New Year’s Celebration in Little Tokyo” will be supported by Japanese American Cultural & Community Center and will be moved to JACCC Plaza from Weller Court.
