Los Angeles will resonate with the timeless melodies of Japan’s Showa era as the “Spring Grand Kayo Festival” takes center stage on Sunday, April 13, at the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in Little Tokyo.
This vibrant musical celebration, running from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, promises an afternoon steeped in nostalgia and community spirit.
Produced by the esteemed Noriko Yonami, a former star of the Shochiku Kagekidan (SKD), the festival is a labor of love, brought to life by the LA Kansai Club and supported by the Japan Singers Association of America. With over 20 classic Japanese songs on the program, the event is set to be a heartfelt tribute to a golden age of music.
The festival boasts a stellar lineup of performers, including Shoko Helm, representative of Karaoke Kinyokai; Marisa Kosugi, whose recent performance at the Emperor’s Birthday Celebration in the Japanese Consul General’s residence captivated audiences with her rendition of the Japanese and American national anthems; Junichi Araki, the driving force behind LunLun Karaoke; and Akira Fujimoto from the Japan Singers Association of America. The event will be masterfully hosted by the ever-popular Tack Nishi.
As 2025 marking the 100th year of the Showa era, the festival’s selection of songs leans heavily on the beloved classics of this era. Organizers aim to provide a unique opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in the beauty of Japanese lyrics and the enduring charm of these timeless tunes.
Beyond the music, the “Spring Grand Kayo Festival” is a celebration of community and connection. The LA Kansai Club, with support from a Keiro grant, is particularly focused on providing an enriching experience for seniors, offering a chance to dress up, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy a vibrant social outing. To further support this initiative, bus transportation from South Bay to Little Tokyo will be provided for the first 50 seniors who register.
The event is designed to bridge generational gaps, inviting attendees of all ages to share in the joy of music. Yonami, who has a history of organizing successful karaoke events at her Gardena studio, sees this festival as a significant step in fostering community engagement.
“This festival has grown significantly, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support of the LA Kansai Club and the Japan Singers Association of America,” Yonami shares. “We’ve carefully curated the song selection to ensure everyone, from young to old, finds something to love.”
The festival venue will also feature rental spaces for vendors and promotional booths, creating a lively marketplace atmosphere. The organizers are actively seeking food and drink vendors, sponsors, and volunteers, including bilingual music students, to contribute to the event’s success.
Tickets are priced at $15, with free admission for those 80 and over, thanks to the Keiro grant. Tickets can be purchased via Vemno or Zelle (account: LaKansai.club@gmail.com), or through the performing singers and Noriko Yonami. The “Spring Grand Kayo Festival” is more than just a concert; it’s a cultural celebration, a community gathering, and a nostalgic journey through the heart of Japanese music.
