“Art of Manga” features original drawings by 10 groundbreaking manga artists who helped shape the evolution of the medium from the 1970s to today. Over the course of the exhibition, we’ll be sharing a closer look at each artist’s life and work, starting with legendary storyteller Chiba Tetsuya

Tokyo-born Chiba Tetsuya’s childhood was marked by the struggles of postwar Japan. Over his career, he has explored subjects like poverty, discrimination, corruption, bravery, family, friendship, perseverance, and love.

He gained widespread fame with “Ashita no Joe: Fighting for Tomorrow,” a landmark collaboration with writer Takamori Asao..

Chiba, now 86 years old, continues to draw and teach the next generation of manga artists, He was recently honored as the first manga artist to receive Japan’s prestigious “Order of Culture,” a recognition of his enduring impact on Japanese art and culture.

「マンガの芸術」展では、1970年代から現代に至るまで、マンガという表現形式の発展を支えてきた10人の革新的な作家による原画を展示しています。展覧会の会期中にわたり、各作家の人生と作品に迫る特集を順次お届けします。第一回は、物語の名手、ちばてつや氏のご紹介です

東京生まれのちばてつや氏は、戦後日本の混乱と苦難の中で幼少期を過ごしました。長年にわたる作品には、貧困、差別、腐敗といった問題から、勇気、家族、友情、忍耐、そして愛といったテーマまで、多岐にわたる題材が描き出されています。

作家の高森朝雄氏との伝説的な共作『あしたのジョー』で一躍その名を広めました。

現在86歳になるちばてつや氏は、今もなお創作活動を続けながら、次世代のマンガ家たちの育成にも力を注いでいます。近年では、日本の芸術文化への多大な貢献が評価され、マンガ家として初めて、栄誉ある「文化勲章」を受章しました。
