Art of Manga | Taniguchi Jiro
“Art of Manga” features original drawings by 10 groundbreaking manga artists who helped shape the evolution of the medium from the 1970s to today. Over the course of the exhibition, we’re sharing a closer look at each artist’s life and work.
Next up is Taniguchi Jirō, a prolific artist known for his cinematic storytelling and quiet emotional depth. While best known for introspective, atmospheric works like “A Distant Neighborhood” and “The Solitary Gourmet,” he also explored hard-boiled noir, science fiction, and stories of Edo-period Japan with equal precision and grace.
Deeply influenced by European comics, especially the work of Moebius, Taniguchi found wide acclaim in France, where he was knighted as a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011” Whether mapping the inner world of a lonely traveler or the streets of 19th-century Edo, Taniguchi’s work is a quiet invitation to see the world anew.

「マンガの芸術」展では、1970年代から現代に至るまで、マンガという表現形式の発展を支えてきた10人の革新的な作家による原画を展示しています。展覧会会期中を通し、各作家の人生と作品に迫る特集を順次お届けしています。
次にご紹介するのは、映画的な語り口と静かな情感で知られる多作のマンガ家、谷口ジロー氏です。『遥かな町へ』や『孤独のグルメ』のような内省的で情感豊かな作品で最もよく知られていますが、ハードボイルドなノワール、SF、江戸時代を舞台にした物語など、多岐にわたるジャンルの作品も丹念かつ優雅に描き出しています。
ヨーロッパのコミック、特にメビウスの作品から大きな影響を受けた谷口氏は、フランスでも高い評価を得ました。2011年にはフランス政府より芸術文化勲章シュヴァリエを授与されています。。孤独な旅人の内面世界から、19世紀江戸の街並みに至るまで、谷口氏の作品は、新たな視点で世界を見つめ直す静かなきっかけを与えてくれます。
