LOS ANAGELES, CA - Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi recently concluded a high-profile visit to the United States, with key stops in Hawaii, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. The visit, held from January 12 to 18, 2026, focused on reinforcing the Japan-U.S. alliance and advancing cooperation in the defense industry.
On January 13, Minster Koizumi toured Neros Technology in El Segundo, where he received a comprehensive briefing on the company’s drone business, reflecting Japan’s growing interest in cutting-edge defense technologies.
Later that day, the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles hosted a reception to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Operation Tomodachi—a pivotal humanitarian relief effort following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The event was attended with nearly 160 distinguished guests, including representatives from the U.S. military, Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and leaders from both nations’ defense industries.
The evening featured remarks from Minister Koizumi, Admiral Patrick Walsh (retired), who commanded Operation Tomodachi, and Consul General Kosei Murota of Los Angeles.
Notable attendees included U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General Henry Dolberry Jr. who stations in San Diego, and Captain Shinya Tanaka, Commanding Officer of the JS Chokai, currently docked in San Diego. Guests participated in the traditional kagami biraki, a ceremonial sake barrel opening, symbolizing unity and celebration.
Throughout the reception, Koizumi emphasized the importance of maintaining and strengthening future defense production and technology ties between Japan and the United States. Attendees enjoyed Japanese cuisine and sake from regions hosting U.S. military bases, celebrating the enduring friendship and alliance through shared memories and renewed connections.
