TOKYO — Shiba Park Hotel, one of Tokyo’s most distinguished hospitality landmarks, invites visitors to discover the beauty and heritage of traditional Japanese craftsmanship through its seasonal Tale of Artisans Exhibition, on view from June 1 through September 6, 2026. Admission is free.
Held in the hotel’s first-floor Library Lounge and Second Floor Foyer, the exhibition celebrates the artistry and stories of Japan’s master craftspeople while offering guests an immersive cultural experience beyond sightseeing. All exhibition pieces are available for purchase.
Founded in 1948 to serve international trade missions, Shiba Park Hotel has evolved into a unique “library hotel” featuring approximately 2,000 carefully curated books selected by Ginza Tsutaya Books. Following extensive renovations completed between 2020 and 2023, the hotel now combines modern comfort with authentic Japanese cultural experiences, including tea ceremonies and Kintsugi workshops.
Tale of Artisans Exhibition highlights two renowned traditional crafts:
Kasama Ware, a celebrated style of Japanese pottery from Kasama City in Ibaraki Prefecture, traces its origins to the mid-Edo period. Today, Kasama is recognized as one of Japan’s leading ceramic centers, attracting artists from around the world while preserving centuries-old traditions. Featured in the exhibition are works by Kuno Toen Keiko, the 14th-generation successor to Kuno Toen, the original Kasama Ware kiln and the oldest continuously operating kiln in Japan’s Kanto region.
The exhibition also features Koshu Inden, a traditional craft from Yamanashi Prefecture known for its distinctive technique of applying lacquer to deerskin to create elegant decorative patterns. Appreciated for its soft texture and vibrant colors, Koshu Inden represents centuries of refined craftsmanship. Displayed works are created by Inden no Yamamoto, the only workshop in Japan with a craftsperson officially recognized as a “Traditional Craftsperson for Koshu Inden.”
