Makoto Taiko strives to elevate spiritual sentiment in the performers and the audience members through playing a traditional Japanese percussion instrument known as “Taiko”.
The group’s drumming serves as a bridge among different cultures and encourages global understanding that transcends language and words.
Makoto Taiko currently performs under the instruction of Koji Nakamura, former leader of the Shumei Taiko Ensemble, and 2007 Grammy® Award-winner as an artist on Paul Winter's CD album, "Crestone".
Makoto Taiko is the only Japanese taiko drumming group to present a full concert at this year’s World Festival of Sacred Music in Los Angeles.
The World Festival of Sacred Music – Los Angeles which runs from October 1-16, 2011, began as a one-time millennium event in 1999 with a letter from His Holiness the Dalai Lama who suggested that people from around the world mark the new millennium with hope and commitment to peace and universal responsibility through music.
This event was founded on the belief that sacred music has the ability to bring forth our shared human values of peace, understanding, and respect for all living things.
The Festival is not a commercial venture, nor does it promote or endorse any political or religious agenda.
Offering an alternative, community-oriented model to the corporate values that dominate the entertainment culture of Los Angeles, the Festival provides opportunities for people to come together and investigate issues of tolerance and diversity within our complex, urban environment.
