Los Angeles County’s Music Center will present the very first Ondo night at a special Dance Downtown at its plaza on Friday, August 24, from 6:30 pm through 10:00 pm.
The term “Ondo” known in the Japanese American community in Southern California actually means “Bon Odori” dancing in Japan.
Free admission. All are welcome. No experience necessary.
Miles Hamada, coordinator for the Ondo night of Dance Downtown, says, “August 24 is the last Ondo of this summer!”
Japanese folk fusion ensemble Minyo Station will provide live music for dance, and taiko player Gorge Abe will be keeping the beat for the dancers. Christine Inouye will give dance lessons in the night.
Many of favorite dances of the Bon Odori in Japanese American communities and Nisei Week will be danced. Wearing yukata and happi is encouraged.
The plaza will be open around 5:30 pm, and picnic tables will be provided for the public to have dinner. They will also have a limited selection of booths selling food.
Parking is $9 and is located underneath of the Music Center plaza.
The Music Center is located 135 North Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
