The 68th commemorative service for the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs will be observed on Sunday, August 4, from 2 pm at Koyasan Buddhist Temple, 342 East First Street in Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles.
The American Society of Hiroshima/Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors (ASA) and Koyasan Temple will co-sponsor the service in front of the Hiroshima Peace
Flame housed at the temple altar.
The event is open to the public.
Bishop Emeritus Taiasen Miyata will conduct the service and deliver a message. The speaker will be Junji Sarashina, a member of ASA, who will speak about his own tragic experience during and after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
According to historical records, an ember from the Peace Flame in Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park was brought to Los Angeles by Mayor Tom Bradley and housed in Koyasan’s altar since the summer of 1989. Temple members have prayed daily for victims in front of the flame.
