From 2001 through 2019, the US Sumo Open grew from about 1,000 fans to 5,000 fans at the Walter Pyramid Arena in the California State University, Long Beach. Among the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 US Sumo Open was held online.

Because the 5,000-seat Pyramid Arena is not allowing large-scale events, the US Sumo Open 2021 will come to the Terasaki Budokan, an iconic Japanese sports and martial arts center in Little Tokyo.
