
Nihon Buyo Kai of California presents An Afternoon with Buyo Makeup Master Kanda Mitsunaga on Sunday June 22, 2025 at Pasadena Conservatory of Music Auditorium, 100 North Hill Avenue Pasadena, CA 91106.
Nihon Buyo Kai of California has invited an internationally renowned Japanese classical dance (Nihon Buyo) makeup master, Kanda Mitsunaga, from Tokyo, Japan. to present a demonstration to the public and a hands-on workshop for Japanese classical dancers.
Presented in two parts, the workshop Part 1 (from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) will include a lecture and demonstration by Kanda Mitsunaga, who will demonstrate the traditional art of “okesho” makeup application for both female and male Buyo roles.
Presented in Japanese with live English translation, the demonstration will be followed by a brief question and answer period.
The Part 2 (from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) is hands-on instructional workshop designated exclusively for Nihon Buyo practitioners and performing arts educators.
Participants must bring Nihon Buyo make-up kits. Lighted battery operated mirrors are suggested, but not mandatory. Limited number of makeup kits are available by pre-purchase order with donation.
In the spirit of public education and cultural exchange, Part 2 will be open to university-level performing arts educators.
Registration fees for Part 1: advance ticket purchase for $30 ; NBK members and students for $25; $35 at the door.
Fees for Part 2: $80 per person with advance registration only. Makeup kits are available for $40 donation to university-level performing arts educators.

Nihon Buyo Kai of California is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization incorporated in 2012 to promote Nihon Buyo and the arts which are an integral part of its performance.
Past educational presentations have highlighted the shamisen (3-stringed lute instrument), koken (stage assistant), and katsura (wig) styling.
Past dance performances included a unique collaboration featuring dance instructors from the Bando, Wakayagi, Azuma, Nakamura and Majikina dance schools from the Southern California area.
