The Little Tokyo Service Center’s (LTSC) latest affordable housing initiative, the Umeya Project, has been honored with the “Supportive Housing Development of the Year” award by the Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing (SCANPH) at the Homes Within Reach Awards.

Located at the intersection of Little Tokyo and Skid Row, the Umeya Project transforms the historic Umeya Rice Cake Company factory and warehouse into a vibrant, mixed-use community. The development offers 175 deeply affordable apartments, with half of the units designated as Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

Developed in partnership with local Skid Row organizations, the project also serves as a resource hub, providing workshops and support services for both residents and the broader community. The ground floor features approximately 13,000 square feet of space for community, commercial, and service provider use. The LEED-certified building includes a 4,000-square-foot landscaped courtyard, a community-led mural by local artist Showzart, and an exhibit honoring the Umeya family’s legacy as a three-generation Japanese-American business.

“This project is about building community and protecting our residents,” said LTSC Co-Executive Director Takao Suzuki. “We’re looking back to our roots of activism and organizing, and we’re grateful for our partnership with the Skid Row community as we work together to create positive change.”

The Umeya Project marks the first time LTSC is serving as the lead service provider for an affordable housing development, with an expanded Homeless Services team now stationed onsite to help residents achieve stability and safety. Residents have already begun moving in, with full occupancy expected soon.

Rex Hamano, family representative and president of Umeya, reflected on the project’s significance: “Our family business has been part of Little Tokyo since 1918. We are truly excited to see LTSC advance its mission of community revitalization and cultural preservation for generations to come.”

Pre-applications for the housing lottery closed on January 31, 2025, but interested individuals can still apply to the accessible unit waiting list.
