“Art of Manga” features original drawings by 10 groundbreaking manga artists who helped shape the evolution of the medium from the 1970s to today. As part of the exhibition, we’re highlighting the unique paths and styles that define each artist’s legacy.
Next up is Yamazaki Mari, whose path to becoming a mangaka was anything but conventional. She pursued classical painting in Florence, and after years of artistic struggle, she made the leap into manga at age 30. Her breakout hit “Thermae Romae,” about a Roman architect who time-slips into modern Japanese bathhouses, was born not from planning, but from a flash of inspiration — what she calls “creative alchemy.”
Yamazaki’s work bridges ancient history and everyday life, humor and philosophy. From the ruins of Damascus to the museums of Paris to the hot springs of Japan, her stories are rich with cultural collisions and insights shaped by global wandering.

「Art of Manga」展では、1970年代から現在に至るまで、マンガという表現媒体の進化に貢献してきた革新的な10人のマンガ家による原画を紹介しています。
本展では、それぞれのマンガ家の歩みと作風に焦点を当て、その独自の足跡と表現の魅力を浮き彫りにします。
次にご紹介するのは、その道のりがきわめて異色なマンガ家、ヤマザキマリ氏です。フィレンツェで古典絵画を学び、長い芸術的模索を経て、30歳でマンガの道へ飛び込みました。古代ローマの建築家が現代日本へタイムスリップする大ヒット作『テルマエ・ロマエ』は、緻密な計画から生まれたものではなく、彼女が「創作の錬金術」と呼ぶひらめきから誕生したものです。
ヤマザキ氏の作品は、古代史と日常、ユーモアと哲学を自在に行き来します。ダマスカスの遺跡からパリの美術館、そして日本の温泉まで。彼女の物語は、世界各地を巡り歩いた経験から生まれる文化の交錯と洞察に満ちています。
