Rev. Yuryu Mori of the Los Angeles Koyasan Buddhist Temple was invited by Associate Professor Jonathan Young to deliver two lectures at California State University, Bakersfield on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
These lectures focused on Buddhism, Shingon Buddhism, and the missionary activities of Koyasan in the United States. The invitation provided an important opportunity to engage with students in an academic setting and to introduce Buddhist teachings beyond the traditional boundaries of the temple.
During the lectures, the students listened with remarkable attentiveness and posed many thoughtful questions. Their sincere interest and engagement left a deep impression on Rev. Mori, highlighting the value of dialogue between religious traditions and contemporary higher education.
Reflecting on the experience, Rev. Mori emphasized the significance of stepping outside the temple to share the teachings of Shingon Buddhism with a wider audience.
For a Buddhist priest engaged in missionary work, such outreach is not merely an opportunity but a vital responsibility for Rev. Mori.
