The Annual Nagasaki 8.9 Peace Exhibition is open to anyone who seeks peace, regardless of nationality, age, or type of artwork. Running continuously since 1980, this year marks its 47th showing. Works include paintings by children from Hiroshima Prefecture, the United States, Taiwan, and other countries, fostering ongoing exchanges with artists from outside the prefecture and abroad.
In this year, approximately 170 pieces will be on display, encompassing paintings, calligraphy, photography, ceramics, contemporary art, and children’s drawings.
Lantern of the East – Los Angeles, or LELA sent 26 art works to Nagasaki this year. After the 8.9 Peace Exhibition at Prefectural Art Museum, these 26 artworks will be exhibited at a gallery in Nagasaki City Hall from August 26 through September 8
The exhibition title “8.9” refers “August 9th” which was the date the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
It was especially significant to the founder of the LELA Art group, Mr. Hideo Sakata, who, as a 10 year old native of Nagasaki at the time, survived this horrific event although members of his family did not.
Mr. Sakata was the original organizer of this peace exhibition as an adult as part of his advocacy for peace and against war, especially the use of atomic weapons, ever again.
