SAN DIEGO – The Japanese Friendship Garden and Museum is pleased to share this opportunity to experience the rich traditions of Japanese textile arts through “Colors of Nature: Messages from Antiquity”  at Exhibit Hall and Katazome: Japanese Traditional stencil dyeing” at Inamori Pavillion from August 1 through October 25, 2026

This exhibition features natural plant-based materials, as well as various works in katazome, a traditional Japanese stencil dyeing technique by Prof. Fumiyo Imafuku of Otemae University in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture.

Through these works, visitors are invited to explore the beauty of the finished textiles and the cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and time-honored processes of life.

Katazome: Japanese Traditional Stencil Dyeing

This is an exhibition by students of Textile Arts, Faculty of Architecture and Art, Otemae University in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture.

Katazome is a traditional Japanese stencil-dyeing technique that has been passed down for centuries. The works in this exhibition showcase how students honor traditional knowledge, techniques, and aesthetics while exploring their own contemporary ideas and artistic expressions.

Through these works, viewers will discover how this time-honored craft continues to inspire new generations of artists.

Artist Fumiyo Imafuku

Fumiyo Imafuku is a Japanese textile artist and professor of Architecture and Art at Otemae University in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. She earned her B.A. and M.A. in Textiles from Kyoto City University of Arts and specializes in traditional dyeing, weaving, and textile-based installations.

Imafuku is known for her research on natural dyes, particularly the revival of ancient indigo dyeing techniques. Since 2017, she has explored and recreated these historic methods, presenting her work in exhibitions throughout Japan and internationally, including projects related to Expo 2025 Osaka.
