On July 21, 2013, a breezy and beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Friends of Shoseian group presented Chanoyu (the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony) to a party of 29 guests at Shoseian Tea House in Brand Park, Glendale, CA.
The occasion celebrated the 92nd birthday for a sharp and witty great-grandmother, Mrs. Kaplan, who had visited Japan many times with her husband.
Her memories of Kyoto are especially dear to her heart as she proclaimed “I feel like a queen!” sitting as shokyaku (honored guest).
The brushed calligraphy showing “Ayumi sachi oushi“ (This path is filled with joy.) was explained to all of the guests as part of the ceremony.
Grandchildren from Israel and Colombia traveled to join her for this very special occasion.
Mrs. Kaplan’s son and daughter coordinated with Friends of Shoseian to make the event most memorable.
Sharing the celebration of such a momentous birthday in a traditional Japanese tea house was a first for all of the guests. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their time together.
