November 1996—
I arrived at LAX from Narita Airport.
It was a journey to shed my old self and meet a new version of me.
I couldn’t speak much English, I didn’t know my way around,
but there was something I had been searching for.
Now, 29 years later—
This spring, in my second home, Little Tokyo,
I have been given the opportunity to share my most cherished songs at Zenshuji Temple.

Ken Koshio Sings Songs of SHOWA era (1926-1989)
It has been 25 years since I opened my guitar case
and sang on the streets of Japanese Village Plaza.
How many people have supported me along the way?
How many have passed by, even if just for a moment?
How many hearts have my songs truly reached?
The songs I still sing today.
The songs I once sang but no longer do.
The songs that fade into the past.
The songs I can never forget.
And the songs I want to sing now—more than ever.
The Showa era began in 1926 and ended in 1989.
Japanese Americans lived through those turbulent times,
enduring the waves of history with resilience and strength.
In 2025, we mark 100 years since the start of Showa.
Through Heisei era and now Reiwa era, time has moved on—
but something from that era is missing today.
It was a time when richness and tension coexisted,
when people hid their pain yet fought to survive,
when the essence of life was deeply felt in everything.
Modern convenience and economic prosperity
have taken away something irreplaceable—
the raw energy of life, the meaning of survival, the value of existence.
Through this concert, I hope we can share and rediscover that spirit together.
"Songs change with the world, and the world changes with songs."
To endure this era,
to continue dreaming the dreams we once saw,
I am grateful for this time and space we can share.
Cultural News has also walked this journey for over 25 years,
dedicated to sharing Japanese culture and the lives of the Japanese American community in Los Angeles.
Now more than ever, we must share Japanese culture with the world
and unite through the spirit of Yamato-gokoro—the Japanese heart.
One year after the 9/11 in 2001,
I traveled to Ground Zero in New York,
offering my songs and 10,000 paper cranes.
Since then, the Senbazuru journey has remained my lifelong mission.
This time, I will sing with the powerful sounds of taiko,
the gentle strumming of the acoustic guitar and sanshin,
the soulful cries of the harmonica,
and the breath of the Native American flute.
For those who have suffered from the California wildfires,
for those struggling across the world,
let us sing a song of prayer—together.
In Little Tokyo, after all these years, let’s sing "Ue o Muite Arukou (SUKIYAKI)" together once again.

祈りのうた
1996年11月、成田空港からLAXへ。
それは、これまでの自分を脱ぎ捨て、新しい自分と出会うための旅だった。
右も左も分からず、英語もままならない中、それでも探し求めるものがあった。
それから29年——
この春、第二の故郷・リトル東京の禅宗寺で、大切な歌を届ける機会をいただいた。
3月29日（土）午前11時 小塩ケン「昭和100年」を歌う
2000年から、ジャパニーズ・ビレッジ・プラザでギターケースを広げ、ストリートで歌っていたあの頃から、もう25年が経つ。
どれだけの人々に支えられてきただろう。
どれほど多くの人が、目の前を通り過ぎていっただろう。
どれくらいの心に、歌が届いただろうか。
今も歌い続ける歌。
あの頃歌っていたけれど、もう歌わなくなった歌。
忘れ去られていく歌。
忘れられない歌。
今だからこそ歌いたい歌——。
1926年に始まった昭和、1989年に終わった。
日本の激動の時代をアメリカとともに生きた日系人たち、
世界の荒波の中で生き抜いてきた人々の遺伝子を、今の時代に歌いたい。
2025年は昭和100年。
平成、令和と時代は移れど、あの時代にあったもの——
それは、今の時代にはあまり存在しない何か。
それは、豊かさと緊張感が共存していた時代。
痛みを隠しながらも、乗り越えるために必死に生きた人々の生き様が、
すべてのものに感覚的に刻まれていた時代。
便利さや経済的豊かさが失わせてしまったもの——
命のエネルギー、生きる意味、価値。
このコンサートで、それを共に分かち合えたらと願う。
「歌は世につれ、世は歌につれ」
この時代を生き抜くために、
あの日の夢を今も描き続けるために、
この場所と時間を共有できることに感謝します。
カルチュラル・ニュースも、1998年の創刊から25年以上。
四半世紀にわたり、西海岸を中心に日本文化と日系社会の営みを伝え続けてきた。
今こそ、ジャパニーズ・カルチャーを世界へ発信し、大和心を共有したい。
2001年9月11日から1年後、
ニューヨーク・グラウンドゼロに私の歌と10,000羽の千羽鶴を捧げた。
それ以来、千羽鶴の旅は私のライフワークとして続いている。
今回は、和太鼓、アコースティックギター、三線、ハーモニカ、
そしてネイティブフルートとともに、祈りの歌を届けたい。
カリフォルニアの火災の被害者へ、
世界中で苦しみの中にある人々へ、
祈りを込めて——。
久しぶりのリトル東京で、一緒に「上を向いて歩こう（SUKIYAKI）」を歌いましょう。
