A unique cultural event honoring young adults will take place in Gardena, California, as Nadeshikokai (Japanese Culture and Traditions, Inc.) hosts its annual Seijinshiki, or Coming-of-Age Ceremony, on Sunday, January 11, 2026. The celebration will be held at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI) from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Seijinshiki is a cherished Japanese tradition that marks the transition into adulthood. The ceremony, which dates back to the eighth century, is typically held in Japan for those turning 20, the traditional age of adulthood. However, recent changes in Japanese law have lowered the legal age of adulthood to 18, and this year’s event will honor young adults aged 18 to 20.
The ceremony will feature live music, distinguished guests, and participants dressed in beautifully adorned kimonos. Mika Kuroda, president of Nadeshikokai, emphasized the inclusive nature of the event: “Regardless of nationality or gender, we hope all new adults will enjoy wearing kimono and experiencing this timeless Japanese tradition.”
Nadeshikokai, a Los Angeles–based nonprofit founded in 2011 by Kimono Master Takako Sasaki, is dedicated to promoting Japanese culture and fostering cultural exchange within California’s diverse communities. The organization welcomes members of all backgrounds who are interested in Japanese culture and kimono.
This year marks Nadeshikokai’s 14th Seijinshiki ceremony, produced with the help of dedicated volunteers. Families, friends, and community members are invited to join in celebrating the achievements and bright futures of these young adults.
Registrations are required to participate in the 2026 Seijinshiki for $150. Furisode kimono rental and dressing included registration fee are available for $550. For Seijinshiki Registrations and learning about Nadeshikokai’s activities, visit www.nadeshikokai.org.
