Alternate Currents

The new theatre and dance festival at Electric Lodge

Nov. 7-9th   &   Nov. 15-16th,  2014

“Alternate Currents,” a curated experimental performing arts festival, will be presented at the Electric Lodge Performing Arts Center in Venice, CA for two weekends in November:  November 7 – 9, and November 15 – 16.

Featuring new work by recognizable local and international artists including:  Genevieve Carson, String Theory, Kevin Williamson, Gracie Whyte, No)one Art House, and  Oguri with Body Weather Laboratory.

This interdisciplinary festival provides a platform venue for new audiences to discover Los Angeles’ most cutting edge dancers, choreographers and performance artists.

Opening the festival program is choreographer Genevieve Carson’s premiere evening length work Unadult in the main theater, followed by a riveting performance by String Theory featuring guest violonist Sarah Wallin Huff in the open studio series High Voltage.

The festival continues on Saturday, November 8th at 7pm and 9pm, and Sunday, 3pm matinee, with Kevin Williamson and company premiering two new works for Alternate Currents.

Solos, duets, and trios maneuver in a landscape of sumptuous physicality in the evening’s title piece Spiral1.

In this expansive septet, the dancers reveal the beauty and isolation of singularity extending outwardly into space.

Danced to Presque rien avec filles by experimental composer Luc Ferrari, the dancers collide, repel, and circumvent one another in a realm where fate, power, and free will collide.

In Body of Ideas (solo study), Williamson dances intuitively with discarded rehearsal footage from the last five years — allowing the body to morph and alter memory in real-time.

Sunday evening, Nov. 9, 7pm, kicks off with Topography, choreography by Gracie Whyte.

Topography is the mapping of oneself. As we attempt to strip away these demarcations, we are left with people attempting to uncover who they are, with and without their lives illustrated through the movement of topography.

Completing the evening is with LA’s newest visual and movement arts collective No)one Art House with choreography by  featured Artistic Director Gustavo Ramirez Sansano.

The second weekend of the festival with performances on Saturday, Nov. 15 and Sunday, Nov. 16, presents Electric Lodge resident, international artist Oguri with Body Weather Laboratory that transforms the experience of observing dance into visceral group meditations.
