Playing for a Cause: Benefit Concert

Presented by the City of Riverside, a sister city of Sendai, Japan

Performers: Riverside Kingsmen from Martin Luther King High School in Riverside

The program will pay tribute to the friends and families of Sendai, to help with relief efforts from the treacherous earthquake and tsunami.

Donations/Tickets are $20 or $15 with military or student ID.

All proceeds will go directly to Sendai via the International Relations Council of Riverside, and are tax deductible.

All donations will go to directly to the victims compensation funds administered by Miyagi Prefectural Government.

Performers: Psyko Taiko, a Claremont Colleges student taiko group; Claremont Colleges faculty and students for piano, vocal and chamber music selections; Chamber Choir; and the Scripps Dance group.

In addition to individual performances, members of the audience will be invited to join in a community chorus of a Japanese song entitled “Uewo muite arukou” (Look Up at the Sky and Keep Walking” also known as “Sukiyaki.”

3.11 Japan Relief Concert

Sponsored by the City of Cerritos

Performers: 3.11 Japan Relief String Orchestra, comprised of 19 musicians who perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic

Donations by check to the U.S.-Japan Council Earthquake Relief Fund will be accepted at the concert. This relief fund was established to collect donations that directly support immediate relief and the long-term economic recovery and rebuilding of Japan.

Tickets are free and can be reserved by calling the City’s Recreation Services Division at (562) 916-1254. Tickets may be picked up the day of the concert at Cerritos Park East, beginning at 5:30 pm. Seating will be by general admission.

The “3.11 Japan Relief Concert” program will include Samuel Barber – “Adagio for Strings,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – “Divertimento No. 1 in D Major,” Antonio Vivaldi – “Spring” from “The Four Seasons,” and Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky – “String Serenade.”  All program will be conducted by Richard Elegino, violist of Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The 3.11 Japan Relief String Orchestra will also play Japan’s National Anthem and Elegino’s daughter, Sascha, will sing the United States’ National Anthem. Mayor Chen will provide a welcome and introductions at the concert.

Light refreshments will be offered for sale during the concert intermission. All proceeds from the refreshment sales will go to the U.S.-Japan Council Earthquake Relief Fund.

Grammy-nominated band Hiroshima, a jazz and pop band, will headline the “Thousand Hearts”

Japan earthquake relief concert

There will also be an art fair from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Aid Project (JETAP) is an informal coalition of members

from ethnically-diverse professional and community associations throughout California.

Proceeds collected from the concert will be provided to the city of Riverside, the sister city to Sendai, and other direct beneficiaries, such as prefecture government relief accounts. Tickets –  $20, $40, and $60- are available for sale at http://thousandhearts.org

Featured entertainers will include:

HIROSHIMA (jazz band) – Nominated for a Grammy last year, Hiroshima is an American jazz/ fusion smooth jazz band. Their latest album Legacy is a celebration of their 30th year in the recording industry.

QUEST CREW (dance group) – Multi-talented and charismatic Quest Crew entertained their way into MTV viewer’s homes and hearts to become America’s best dance crew. With a high energy mix of mind-blowing tricks and innovative choreography, Quest Crew continues to bring audiences to their feet while on stage or on the screen.

LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS (actor) – Phillps is an American film, television, and stage actor. He earned a supporting actor Golden Globe Award nomination for his role in Stand and Deliver and a Tony Award nomination for his role in The King and I.

TIA CARRERA (singer, actress) – Carrera is a two-time Grammy Award-winning singer. In 2011, she won a Grammy Award for her album “Huana Ke Aloha.” In 2009, she also won a Grammy for her album “Ikena.”

MARK DECASCO (actor) – Food Network’s Iron Chef America, Dancing with the Stars (Season 9)

Featuring Cheonho Yoon on trumpet, Satsuki Innami of flute, the Hideki Ikeura Jazz Quartet, and the Higashi Honganji Otani Gakuen Choir.

Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple provides an afternoon of Japanese music ranging from classic to jazz. The musicians will perform nostalgic Japanese favorites. Donation will be collected at the concert.

Fugetsu-Do Confectionery will provide refreshments for a reception following the concert.
