Japan House Sound of Japan Experience the Essence of Japanese Instruments

The National Federation of Japanese Musical Instruments Association (Zenhouren), in collaboration with JETRO Los Angeles and JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, proudly presents Sounds of Japan | Experience the Essence of Japanese Instruments, at JAPAN HOUSE Salon, Level 5, on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is free and walk-in program.

Sound of Japan is a captivating Japanese cultural event celebrating the artistry, history, and innovation of traditional Japanese music. This special overseas cultural program invites audiences to experience the depth and beauty of Japan’s musical heritage.

Following the acclaimed Japanese musical instrument showcase at the 2025 Osaka–Kansai Expo, this initiative marks the first step in Zenhouren’s mid-term international expansion. Through dynamic live performances, immersive hands-on experiences, and direct engagement with professional Japanese musicians, Sounds of Japan introduces traditional Japanese instruments as vibrant, living expressions of culture that continue to evolve today.

While deeply rooted in Japan’s cultural identity, traditional Japanese instruments remain less familiar to international audiences. Sounds of Japan seeks to change that—expanding global awareness, inspiring curiosity, and fostering meaningful cultural exchange. The program also lays the groundwork for future international performances, educational initiatives, creative collaborations, and expanded overseas opportunities for the Japanese traditional musical instrument sector.

On Monday, February 2, 2026
This public workshop is open to all and does not require advance registration.

Guests are encouraged to arrive by 2:00 PM to enjoy the full Koto and Shamisen Workshop experience, an immersive introduction to traditional Japanese music featuring two iconic instruments: the koto and the Tsugaru shamisen.
