Mike Watanabe, MSW, LHD, founding leader and President Emeritus of Asian American Drug Abuse Program (AADAP) passed away at his Los Angeles home on November 3, 2023.
A public Celebration of Life for Mike Watanabe will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024, 4pm PST at the Holman United Methodist Church, 3320 West Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.

Mike Watanabe dedicated forty-six years of service to Asian American Drug Abuse Program (AADAP), commencing in 1975 as a Counselor within the Therapeutic Community (TC) and steadily ascending through various roles to ultimately assume the position of President and Chief Executive Officer in 1982.
His commitment, guidance, and leadership helped transform the agency into one of the largest comprehensive service providers across Los Angeles County, operating a dozen distinct programs through multiple service sites.
Many current and former staff attribute their career success to Mike. He mentored countless young social workers, community activists, and nonprofit workers who have gone on to leadership roles throughout LA County, nationwide, and even internationally.
He led by example through his unwavering commitment to social justice, impressive work ethic, and unexpectedly big heart. His kindness and generosity have left a lasting impact on the lives of board, staff, and clients for generations to come.
