Lanterns of Hope, Los Angeles Grand Park, August 9, 2024

Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, the Back from the Brink coalition, Teens4Disarmament, and Students for Nuclear Disarmament invite the public to Lanterns of Hope: Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki, an event to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Friday, August 9, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Gloria Molina Grand Park (below the fountain) , 200 N. Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

The evening will commence with a traditional Japanese village dance performance. Following guest speakers, the participants will observe a moment of silence and release individually decorated paper water lanterns to honor the victims of the bombings.

The keynote speaker, Kikuko Otake, a Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor and author of “Masako’s Story: Surviving the Atomic Bombing in Hiroshima,” will share her family’s experience.

Other esteemed speakers include:
Dr. Jimmy Hara, board member of Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles
Eddie Laiche, student activist and co-founder of Students for Nuclear Disarmament
Manon and Kanon Iwata, student activists and founders of Teens4Disarmament

The event aims to foster community while raising public awareness of nuclear threats and building support for banning and eliminating nuclear weapons.
