2016 / Little Tokyo Library Program “Bronzville Presentation” Feb. 13

Forwarded for the Little Tokyo Library

The Little Tokyo Historical Society and the Robey Theatre Company have teamed up with the Little Tokyo Library to do a presentation on Bronzeville on Saturday, Feb. 13, 1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Little Tokyo Library (corner of 2nd and Los Angeles St.).

When the Japanese-Americans were forcibly moved out of Little Tokyo during WWII, the African-Americans moved in and Little Tokyo became known as Bronzeville.

Late night “breakfast clubs” and Jazz became the norm.  Three productions of a play written by Tim Toyama and Aaron Woolfolk entitled, “Bronzeville” were done between 2000-2013, with one of those productions done at Manzanar.  The play was a smashing success.

Thanks to the efforts of Judy Bowman, Johann Hassan and Michael Okamura, and many more people who encouraged and helped in the organization of this event, you’ll have the chance to taste a portion of the play again as CeCe Antoinette (Mama Jean) presents a dramatic portion of the play on Feb. 13.

Also the playwrights will discuss their thought process and share insights into the play, moderated by Miya Iwataki.  Then professional performer Chazz (Clarence Ross) will lead the group in an African Drum Circle, followed by food provided by the Little Tokyo Historical Society’s generous support (rib tips from Big Mama’s in Pasadena).

And finally, we’ll have a kid’s craft where the children get to decorate African drums and take them home with them.

Please RSVP by calling 213-612-0525 and let us know how many adults, teens and children in your party.  There is parking on a first come, first serve basis on the right-hand side as you head south, three driveways down).
